She stood in front of the bathroom mirror, cleaning her teeth with a brush borrowed from her hostess. “Myra Banks, you should be ashamed of yourself,” she said, as her reflection swam in and out of focus. She giggled and slapped a hand over her mouth. “Sshh!”

There was a tap at the door.

“Sorry to disturb.” Etta stood there on the landing, something clasped in her arms. “The bed’s been changed and I found these. I think they’ll fit you.” She handed Myra a pair of flower-patterned pyjamas.

Myra looked at them blankly, then refocused and took them from Etta. “Thanks. They’re very pretty.”

“They’re not new – old ones of mine, I’m afraid – but they’re freshly washed.”

Myra smiled, supressed a belch and said, “Thank you. You’re very kind. I’m afraid I’m a bit sozzled.”

Etta returned the smile. “I know. Not to worry. Take yourself off to bed. I’ll wake you at six, so you’re not late for work.”

“Work…right…thanks. I’ll just splash my face. Night.” She pushed the door closed.

“Goodnight,” Etta called from the landing.
